| No Name Winners We've seen some threads and posts, here, in which championship golf courses, and the championships, themselves, have been somewhat called into question merely because a "no-name" player either contends or wins.
I think it's very important to remember how very good each and every one of these players are. Johnny Miller aptly said it...and I agree...that a very fine line separates the world's 800th ranked player from the 50th ranked.
If any one of you golfers went to your local muni and just happened to be paired with Jason Gore, especially before this week, you would be blown away at how talented this guy is. You would likely say something like this to him: "Dude, you should seriously think about turning pro."
Just because Jason Gore or Olin Browne contends in a major championship; or just because guys like Rich Beem or Ben Curtis actually win one, doesn't mean that the championship, itself, or the course it's being played on, is somehow dubious. It means that a very good player played the tournament of his life. And this is what should be celebrated...a great golfing achievement. |
