How do you work on getting power with a nice tempo, "cough" Ernie Els "cough". Whenever I attempt to slow it down for nice tempo, it doesnt go nearly as far.

I know Els is deceiving since it looks like he is going slow but he is going pretty fast usally. What would some of you out there say. ?

I use to train with the worlds 13th longest driver and he thought me that by slowing down your arms slightly and at the last second really whipping your wrists around. Then do a long follow through, by send you arms as far forward towards your targer. It seems to work. You could always lift alot of weights mainly triceps and chest too.

So you swing harder, but slow your arms down a little right before you hit and whip you wrists through and a long follow through? Seems like it'll take a while to get used to!

For me, hitting the sweet spot on the club with a tempo suited for your body (especially on irons) is the key to distance and trajectory. Swing at 75% and strike the ball in the center of the clubface (use impact tape to be sure). Then, swing at 90% with an off center hit. I bet both balls end up going the same distance.

Hitting it far comes from arm speed. Hit balls with a heavy driver to increase your arm speed. The second component is the club head. Turn the toe of the club over as fast as you can. This is what a true release is and not many people know it. The pro's do! Arm speed coupled with a fast release is all it takes. Els' tempo appears smooth and slow because he has no jerky movements like most hackers but his driver swing speed is around 122 mph. Get that toe turned over. You won't hook it! It will allow your body to rotate and your legs to drive as well....

Arm speed, you say? Well I guess I will work on it, as my country club is having a tournament. Should be fun to see if I get any better trying this out.
