Rep Power: 0 | Why Use Hybrids ? The popularity of hybrid clubs is something that came along while I was totally out of touch with golf so I am not really up on what they are all about. So help an old guy understand why I might want one...or more and how they fit in the bag in terms of use. I have heard that they are popular because a lot of people don't feel comfortable hitting long irons and feel more comfortable with a fairway wood-type club. I have trouble relating to this because while I'm not super-confident with irons over 4, I'm not that keen on woods either. It's not that I can't hit them; I hit them pretty well. It's more mental. With a 5 iron in my hand I have little doubt that I will hit a good shot, even if I do occasionally miss. But even though I hit them pretty well, if I have a 2-iron or 3-wood in my hand, I'm not as confident.
For purposes of this discussion of hybrids, let's assume that I am happy with how I hit my long irons and woods. Is there still a place for a hybrid or two in my bag? I've noticed that some of the pros even carry them. Since I assume those guys feel confident with all their clubs there must be some other reason they would carry a hybrid. Is it strictly for the occasional shot out of the rough? If I got, let's say, a 19* 2 hybrid, would I leave the 2-iron out? Is distance with a given hybrid about the same as the equivalent iron or longer? Oh, I do realize that the hybrid would not be putting the same backspin on the ball. Has someone seen a good article explaining the use of hybrids?
I love buying new toys. I'm a Hogan fan, and I love the look of the CFT hybrids, but I'm having trouble figuring out what I would get out of having one in the bag. I will say that a 5H looks like it might be a really nice club for chippin

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Why Use Hybirds ? Ive heard from various players (as well as pros) that EVERY golfer has a place in their bag for hybrids. Like you said, if you arent super confident with irons over 4, you can get a hybrid replacement for your 3 and 2/5 wood.. They basically are like an iron, you hit them like an iron, but MUCH easier to hit. My friend has a 3 iron hybrid (TM Mid) and whenever i hit it, I realize how much easier it is to hit than a 3 iron. I think they might help you mentally...
Supposed to be really good for chipping and shots out of the rough, also... But yeah, from what Ive heard, hybrids have a place in all bags... I'd like to find some soon, too...

Super easy to hit..I'm going to get the 21 deg. one prolly this week..then out goes the 3i. http://www.golfboards.net/viewtopic.php?t=571

I've always hit my low irons pretty poorly and I can safely say that after only a few times on the range hitting it that I think it will come in handy the next time I have a ~175 yard shot to the green that it will save me. My long irons would put me either very short (flub) or put me pin high but with a wicked slice and still leave me with a hard wedge onto the green. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but probably won't put it to the test until after I hit the range a few more times. It feels different because my brain is telling me to hit it like a wood but you really have to focus on the fact that you need to hit it like an iron.

It was funny because they were saying the days of the 2 and 3 iron are long gone even for tour pro's.

Rep Power: 0 | I believe he carries a five wood once in a while in place of the 2 iron. Last week, at the 16h of Torrey pines, he was hitting 3 iron when he really wanted the 2 iron. Didn't have it because he carried the 5 wood to use on 18.

Rep Power: 0 | I have been using a 21 degree TM Rescue club for about the last 3 years. Always had problems hitting the 3-iron, but this proved to be a great alternative.
When I first started using it, many of my golf buddies scoffed at me and said it must be some type of cheating, heheheh. Now that the pros have started to come out about using them, they will become more mainstream.
I am currently looking to upgrade the one I have and possibly add a second.....
