The Shanks

This has been happening recently and its driving me crazy. I will get in a rhythm on the range and everything is going great then all of a sudden, shank. Then it repeats itself until I have to step back, regroup and concentrate again. The funny part is I can line up 5 balls and rapid fire and they all go dead straight and I hit the sweet spot every time but when I take my my time, stand over the ball and actually think, half the time its a push right or I catch it chunky.

I am thinking I need another lesson at this point. That really settled me down last year.

I truly believe some players have a natural rhythm and feel ingrained, while others are technically-based. It sounds to me like, while you think you may be prepping yourself for a shot, your head is talking yourself out of what you naturally can do. Some people's pre-shot routine consists of "hey, dummy, hit it!"

I get worse when I go to the range too much. When I have a problem, I'm better off just getting the clubs out of my hands and just doing some mental figuring. Example: I've been popping up and making weak contact with my driver lately. I took a flight and READ about a certain training aid. Next round out, I fired multiple 300+ yd drives.

I tihnk that needs to be my routine. Just get the right alignment and fire away. I have such a better rhythm that way. I also feel better when I take several relaxed practice swings just to get a feel especially when you go from a driver to a 7 iron.

Having the same problem, however, once it starts, it can go on for days at a time before it mysteriously disappears. Was playing yesterday when in the middle of the round I started shanking my short irons. I could hit my long irons, but anything less than 7 iron results in an absolutely horrible screaming slice to the right. Have you recieved any help?

Well, thats the exact opposite of what is happening to me (i can hit my short irons but not long irons) - long irons are going right. I found that it helped to move the ball up in my stance a little for the time being but I still haven't figured out the root of the problem. Not sure if that will help you though since you're having the issue with short irons. Maybe move it back in your stance a little?

I had the shanks so bad that it drove a devoted golfer to the range for a whole year. I found that about waist to shoulder high I was counter twisting my hands/arms so that at this point in my swing the back of my left hand was cuped and facing sky high which in effect left the club wide open. Then I couldn't find a method that would cure me of this backswing "Yip". I finally found that if used a strong left hand grip (3 nuckles showing) and v between right thumb and forefinger pointing at and not beyond right shoulder, combined with a slow connected one piece back swing I could finally play good golf again, knock on persimon.
