difference in hitting the ball in driving range and in field

i have this problem not sure what is wrong. i am a beginner and played about 2 seasons now (once a wk).

when i play a round of golf (9 or 18), i can drive the ball in an OK manner - not topping the ball, or taking out giant divets.

but when i practice on the driving range, its like as if i was a complete newcomer to golf. topping the ball, taking out good chunks of green, distance just plain sux and lack consistency (which in the field were OK consistency).

my setup in both situation is the same as when i play a round of golf. the driving range does not use astrotuff, we shot off the grass.

wondering if you guys could give me a pointer where to look for mistakes.

thanks!

My problem is opposite of yours. I do better at the driving range and in my back yard, than I do at the golf course. I can drive the ball really well when no one is watching. As soon as I get around people, I top the ball, take out huge divets, and slice it(whatever that means). I think I get nervous around people.

Sorry, I'm not much help......

It should be like Jenna. Usually you will hit great at the range and suck on the course. Take it as a blessing.

thanks guys... yeah its a blessing, but it doesn't help when i'm trying to tune my swing for consistency and such.

jenna - i think slicing means that the club face is slicing through the ball on contact instead of driving it straight through. it adds an additional spin to the ball that causes it to veir off course (curve ball so the speak).

DITTO. I think the worst resolution to this, is that its probably something wrong with your swing. That was my problem.
