Alcohol and golf

Recently found this question on another forum, what is your stand on this ?

My stand:
I often see guys go out there (leagues are the worst culprit ) and drink to their heart's content, then think nothing of getting in their cars and going home. Sometimes I wish they'd set up a DUI check on the road just out of sight from the course...they'd nail every one of those ignorant fools.

I've never known anyone whose life was saved by a DUI checkpoint. But I've known several good people whose lifes were nearly ruined by one. I don't want drunks driving down the road any more than you do, but at the same time, checkpoints are not the way to handle the problem. This country was founded on personal freedom, let's not keep giving up those Freedoms to every little power hungry Barney Fife who can qualify for a badge. Good cops know how to make an arrest with out screwing up the lives of every one else. Let's give those good cops a raise and our support, and send the little power mongers down the road.

As for drinking and playing golf, I love it! But it's rare that I do have a beer while playing.

I hear you, it is sad when it happens to people who had 3 drinks and got busted their first time ever and they loose there job and license. But, it saves lives when they pull over a couple teenagers that are coming back from a party or some older guy who has been drinking all day at the course and gets in and drives, only to crash into a carpooling party of 6 in a SUV at the next light. I think that the checkpoints are great. I don't know about other states, but here the checkpoints are usually right on the freeway on-ramp, so it prevents drunks from entering the highway, or even people who had 3 drinks, they still should not be driving. Some people can have 3 drinks and you can't tell, some are already barley walking.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against having fun; Golf is all about recreation, but some people over due it especially the leagues. They go out and get plastered at the courses, it is usually a select few out of the bunch and then they go off and just get in their cars and think nothing of it.

That is probally one of my favorite parts of the game. I just think that you need to be responsible about driving, most of the time I will stop drinking about hole 13 or so.

Yeah, see I have no problems with that, it is all in good fun with good judgement. But, when someone has 4-5 drinks and leaves 20 minutes later, that is being stupid. Or someone who drinks all day on the course in 90F weather and still hits the bar for another round only to drive home a little while later.

I have played courses before that did not sell alcohol, and now I ask before I book a tee time.

The drinking and driving part though goes for anywhere that serves drinks, a cop could sit near the exit to most resturants and write tickets until their pen ran out of ink. For example here in NC the legal limit is .08 and article in the local paper a while back said if a 170lb man had 1.75 beers in an hour he would fail a breathalizer. So 2 beers with dinner and you could get a DUI.

I disagree. I think a lot of lives have been saved by checkpoints and getting drunk drivers off the streets. When personal freedom can result in injury and or death to other citizens, it becomes a problem. Thus, laws.

This coming from a guy whose been a passenger in 2 DUI's while friend's were driving home drunk. Although it sucked for them, we really should have been more responsible. And we DEFINATELY are not the only ones too drunk to drive out there.

While playing golf, I LOVE IT. haha. but as I get older, I do recognize the importance of being responsible, especially in regards to drinking and driving.

Same here.......I leave the on-course drinking to people I play with. Easier to win the $2 Nassau that way, heheheh.
