I played one of the best games of my life tonight, but I'll be damned if my partner didn't have his best ever game.
We played the back nine at the local club, Narrow fairways, lots of bunkers and elevated greens. By the 16th hole I had a comfortable lead. We teed off on 17 and I drove about 75 yards further than him. He topped his second shot and took his third just a few feet from me. It hit twenty yards in front of the green, took two hops and hit the pin. Stopping not 3' from the hole. I pulled out my pitching wedge, and dropped the ball about half way from the edge of the green and the hole, it bounced, missing the pin by an inch. It bounced on the green again, then hit the top of the far side bunker, rolled off and into the pond.
By the time I hole out, he had pared the hole, and we were tied.
We lined up on the last hole and he topped the ball. It barely made it past the red tees. I hit a nice drive right down the middle. His second shot got just a little past me, but then it was my turn. I dug a hell of a hole in the dirt, and while the divot went 50 yards, the ball only moved 30.
On our next shots, he landed 20 yards from the right edge of the green and I landed 20 yards from the left edge. Trouble was, he was on level ground and I was on the side of a bunker.
Have you ever tried to use a sand wedge, when your feet are two feet higher than the ball?
He ended up needing a 6' putt and I had to two put from 30 feet.
He beat me by a single stroke!
