Slow play - European Tour takes action

Yesterday Simon Khan shot 70 at the Irish Open, 2 under par. At the end of the round he found out he had been fined £8000 (approx $12K) for slow play. Apparently at one hole he took 56 seconds to play his tee shot, when he was only allowed 40.

It gets worse though - he also has a penalty notice coming in the post fining him £4000 for slow play violations last week! And he's been informed that subsequent violations will see his fines double each time - next time it is £16K.

Now £8K may seem harsh for 16 seconds overtime, but it seems he's been put "on the clock" 10 times this season already. Even Padraig Harrington, who is not exactly Jesse Owens on the course, complained that Khan's slow play cost him shots!

Also Harrington is quoted as saying that the US Tour is really slack on slow play - not sure why he would say that?
