Titleist Readies 735, 660 for Release

Source: TheSandTrap.com

The 735 and the 660 - you've never heard of these clubs before, have you? Well, they're coming and they're from Titleist. The Sand Trap has the scoop.

Adam Barr noted on Golf Central a few days ago that players on the driving range at the TPC at Sawgrass were playing some new Titleist equipment: the 660, the 735, and the well-known 904F.

The 904F, Titleist's new fairway metal, we all know about. The 660 and the 735 are relatively new, and we've got a little information for you…

The 660 is a bore-through muscle-back blade design that Adam Scott and Ernie Els have toyed with in the past few weeks. Whether the bore-through design is meant to increase feel or to move more weight away from the hosel to increase playability - or both - remains to be seen. The 660s are not replacements for the rumored "695" bore-through muscle backs. Titleist currently also has the 670, 680, and 690 in muscle back clubs, and the 660 fits right in line with that numbering scheme.

The 735, or "735.CM" for "combo" or perhaps "cavity muscle" - is just that: a combo set that features cavity-back-like long irons and blade-like short irons, progressively changing from one extreme to the other throughout the set. The iron currently features a hammer and anvil stamp, implying that the club will be forged and not cast. Many in the industry believed Titleist would not come out with a combo set (largely due to their statement "we will never come out with a combo set" <grin>), but are excited that Titleist seems to have changed its mind. Several tour players use the 735 currently, and the clubs are expected to ship in late May or early June.

There's a good chance both will be available in left-handed versions as Titleist CEO Wally Uihlein is himself a lefty.
