Why Use Hybrids ?

The popularity of hybrid clubs is something that came along while I was totally out of touch with golf so I am not really up on what they are all about. So help an old guy understand why I might want one...or more and how they fit in the bag in terms of use. I have heard that they are popular because a lot of people don't feel comfortable hitting long irons and feel more comfortable with a fairway wood-type club. I have trouble relating to this because while I'm not super-confident with irons over 4, I'm not that keen on woods either. It's not that I can't hit them; I hit them pretty well. It's more mental. With a 5 iron in my hand I have little doubt that I will hit a good shot, even if I do occasionally miss. But even though I hit them pretty well, if I have a 2-iron or 3-wood in my hand, I'm not as confident.

For purposes of this discussion of hybrids, let's assume that I am happy with how I hit my long irons and woods. Is there still a place for a hybrid or two in my bag? I've noticed that some of the pros even carry them. Since I assume those guys feel confident with all their clubs there must be some other reason they would carry a hybrid. Is it strictly for the occasional shot out of the rough? If I got, let's say, a 19* 2 hybrid, would I leave the 2-iron out? Is distance with a given hybrid about the same as the equivalent iron or longer? Oh, I do realize that the hybrid would not be putting the same backspin on the ball. Has someone seen a good article explaining the use of hybrids?

I love buying new toys. I'm a Hogan fan, and I love the look of the CFT hybrids, but I'm having trouble figuring out what I would get out of having one in the bag. I will say that a 5H looks like it might be a really nice club for chippin
